"Of the Passing of the First Born" and "Of the Coming of John" are rather unique chapters in this book. The first is a very personal account of the death of Du Bois's child, and the second is, in fact, a short story. Do these chapters belong in a socialogical study of the African-American experience? Why or why not? Are your conclusions related to race, or would you say the same thing about a white-authored study?
